Immediately after HIFU, there is swelling of the gland and sloughed tissue will pass in the urine through the catheter. In some patients an endoscopic prostatic resection may be necessary.

Preservation of potency is maintained in greater than 70% of patients, but there will be no ejaculation with climax and thus the patient is infertile.

The reported complications include transient perineal pain, urethral stricture and fistula.

Rectal injury was once a problem with HIFU, but with the newest Sonablate 500 technology this is now rare.
